Coucou les French learners,
I have to tell you more about our fantastic week in Pau! I think what was so special about this week was the lovely group of human beings together in this adventure.
Our group of 11 French learners was committed to understand and speak French no matter what. When we were having beautiful lunches together and all of us could speak English, everyone made it a priority to speak French. Everyone was committed to speaking French.

Barry mentioned an interesting point:
I have been telling friends that the experience was really helpful, mostly thanks to you and Astrid being at our sides when on walks or at lunch because you encouraged the use of French by speaking slowly and listening. While traveling I try my French with natives, but I often feel like I am wasting the time of a server/shopkeeper/tourist office worker so we switch to English. But in the group, especially at lunches, we had the time to gather thoughts and speak (no matter how badly) because you both were so good at listening and making us feel welcome to try.
After reading Barry’s comment, I thought how creating a supportive environment where learners feel comfortable using French is crucial. A supportive and encouraging space for you to interact, gain confidence, and gradually incorporate French into real-life situations is key to stay committed in your French journey.
Picture this: you, sitting in a room, me by your side, listening to you and making you feel welcome to try.

Motivational support
You know this already. Acquiring French can be challenging. At the start of your journey, you listen to comprehensible stories on your own. You need to listen to lots of stories in order to understand French. It is a solo journey and there may be times when motivation wanes.
When you reach the stage when you understand quite a lot of French. You may feel you are ready to speak but you don’t feel confident enough. You are probably going through the Teen Stage and you want to share your sessions’ answers with someone who can give you personalized feedback.
Watch the first session of the Teen Stage to understand what I mean about “sessions’ answers” (it is free!).
As your coach, I serve you as a source of encouragement, reminding you of your achievements and helping you overcome hurdles.
Accountability Partnership
Knowing that you have me invested in your progress creates a sense of accountability. You are more likely to stay committed when you have someone supporting and guiding you.
We first schedule a free 30-minute Zoom meeting at your convenience. During this session, we discuss your specific goals, and how we can tailor my coaching to your needs. I help you create a structured acquisition plan tailored to your goals and proficiency level. This plan outlines specific milestones and the steps needed to achieve them.
I assist you in setting realistic and achievable goals. By breaking down larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks, you can track your progress more effectively. You also track your progress objectively. Through guided conversations and portfolio reviews, tracking your advancement provides a clear understanding of your development.
Committed for 6 months (at least)
You know this already. Language acquisition is a gradual process. It involves not just learning vocabulary and grammar but also developing an intuitive feel for the language. An extended commitment allows for a deeper and more sustained engagement with the process.
You may encounter plateaus in your French journey. These are periods where progress may seem slower. A typical plateau is when you reach the intermediate level. You understand what you hear and read quite well but you still find it challenging to understand fast spoken French. You want to speak but you still translate in your head too often.
A 6-month commitment allows for overcoming these plateaus and continuing to advance. I create a low-pressure setting, reducing your language anxiety and allowing you to speak French without fear.
During our regular 1-1 sessions, I get to know you and what really interests you. I provide or recommend specific resources based on your interests and goals. You build confidence, becoming more comfortable expressing yourself in French.
Our scheduled coaching sessions provide regular opportunities for check-ins. During these sessions, you can discuss your progress, challenges, and set new objectives. This regular cadence keeps you accountable.
Fear not! You are not alone.
I am here to guide you.
I am your “French Maman”.
