Coucou les French learners,
When I started teaching French in England (many, many years ago!), I believed that speaking was the first step toward French fluency. I was asking my students to repeat over and over again phrases they didn’t understand… As expected, most of them ended up hating French!
When you don’t understand it, you don’t like it!
I then realized the true foundation of language learning lies in understanding.
Before you can speak, you need to immerse yourself in French through listening and reading. Comprehensible input means exposing yourself to French that you can understand, even if not every word is familiar.
You allow your brain to naturally absorb the language’s structure, vocabulary, and nuances (without studying, memorizing or drilling!).
Now, take time to reflect: have you received enough French comprehensible input?
Here are three signs that indicate you might need more!
1. Translating in Your Head
If you find yourself constantly translating from French to your native language, it’s a clear sign you haven’t received enough comprehensible input.
Translation is a crutch that prevents you from thinking directly in French.
The more you immerse yourself in listening and reading, the more natural it will become to understand and think in French without reverting to your native language.
2. Repeating the Same Errors
Making the same mistakes repeatedly is another indication that you need more input.
Errors in grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation often stem
from insufficient exposure to correct language use.
By listening to and reading more French, you’ll encounter proper usage frequently, helping you internalize the correct patterns and reducing errors over time.
3. Hesitating When Speaking
If you often hesitate when speaking French, it suggests that you’re not yet ready to speak spontaneously.
Hesitation occurs because your brain hasn’t had enough exposure
to naturally form sentences in French.
By increasing your input, you’ll build a stronger mental library of phrases and structures, making speaking more fluid and spontaneous.
