Coucou les French learners,
Are you eager to read a book in French but unsure which one to choose? You’re not alone! This is a common challenge for language learners at all levels.
When I first started to acquire Portuguese, I was eager to dive into classic literature. I started reading “Contos” by Eça de Queirós. However, after a few pages, I realized it was way too difficult for me to understand!
Feeling discouraged, I decided to switch to a simplified version of The Odyssey. To my delight, I found that I could understand most of the story, and the captivating adventure kept me engaged. This experience not only made me want to read more but also significantly improved my Portuguese.
Over time, reading helped me speak more fluently and confidently.
Picking the right book can make a significant difference in your French journey. Here is how to make the best choice.
Reading for pleasure works
Reading for pleasure means choosing texts that you genuinely enjoy and find interesting.
It’s about reading because you want to, not because you have to.
Reading for pleasure immerses you in the language in a natural and enjoyable way. You pick up new words and phrases effortlessly, understand context, and get a feel for the rhythm and flow of French.
It’s about experiencing the language in its most engaging form.
Choosing the right book is crucial. The key is to always opt for something much easier than your perceived level. It might seem counterintuitive, but here’s why this works wonders:
- Familiarity with Structures: When you read easier texts, you repeatedly encounter common French structures and vocabulary, reinforcing your understanding without overwhelming you.
- Building Fluency: Easy books allow you to read more smoothly and quickly, promoting fluency and comprehension.
- Boosting Confidence: Successfully reading a book in French, even a simple one, builds your confidence. You feel a sense of accomplishment that motivates you to keep going.
When you enjoy what you’re reading, you’re more likely to stick with it. This consistent practice is the most efficient way to become fluent in French.

The five fingers rule
Let me introduce you to the Five Fingers Rule, a simple yet effective method to find the perfect book for your current level. Here’s how it works:
- Pick a book that looks interesting to you.
- Open to a random page and start reading.
- For every word you don’t understand, put up a finger.
- If you have five or more fingers up by the end of the page, the book is too difficult for now.

Merci beaucoup, Alice! Pouvais-tu faire des recommendations des livres pour B1/2?
Julie, je vous recommande les romans d’Amélie Nothomb. J’ai écrit une critique à propos d’un de ses romans, “Antéchrista” https://www.aliceayel.com/resources/antechrista-un-roman-damelie-nothomb-mon-avis-sur-ce-livre/
