Coucou les French learners,
In response to last week’s newsletter, Debra wrote to me:
I started seriously learning French when I was 58. I’m 68 now. Not “fluent” but conversational. And, yes. I forget things I know but I do that in English too. Sometimes I remember the French and not the English!!!!I’m pretty proud of my French pronunciation and prosody. Again not perfect but better than most learners (à mon avis) and I’m passionate about improving it. Sounding a little bit French is such fun. Je l’adore !I’m not as studious as Chris but it is a rare day that I don’t do some French. I try to speak online with others as much as I can.Merci Merci.
Age is no barrier to language mastery. Read about Chris French routine here.
Benefit #1 Cognitive stimulation
Acquiring a new language like French provides significant cognitive benefits.
It stimulates the brain, enhances memory, and improves cognitive functions such as problem-solving and multitasking. It keeps your mind sharp and engaged. This contributes to long-term cognitive health.
It increases mental flexibility because knowing a new language involves adapting to new vocabulary and sentence structures. This challenges your brain to be more flexible and adaptable. Studies suggest that bilingual individuals, including those who acquire a new language later in life, exhibit better cognitive flexibility and executive functioning.
In our intermediate online class (you can purchase the replays here), we recently embarked on a captivating journey into the realm of a French poem; a shared experience that goes beyond words.
This immersive experience stimulated our cognitive abilities. The rhythmic patterns, rich imagery, and evocative language of a French poem engage our memory, attention, and language processing skills, fostering cognitive growth and mental agility.
Read and listen to the poem for free! (Make sure to push the Audio sync view buttom to read and listen to Ben’s voice at the same time).
Benefit #2 Cultural enrichment
Acquiring French opens doors to the rich and diverse French-speaking cultures around the world.
It allows you to explore literature, art, cinema, music, and history that may have previously been inaccessible. As an older learner, you discover appreciation for cultural nuances, fostering personal growth and a broader understanding of the world.
That is why we’ve curated a series of captivating videos, complete with audio, transcripts, and a glossary, all centered around the fascinating History of France. Because we believe that a language is more than just vocabulary and grammar.
With each session, you gain compelling French input and you also immerse yourself in the captivating stories, events, and figures that have shaped France.
With audio and transcripts at your disposal, you have the opportunity to enhance your listening comprehension and expand your vocabulary. Our comprehensive glossary ensures that you understand key historical terms, making the acquisition process seamless and enjoyable.
We help you deepen your understanding of French in an engaging and meaningful way. #inputaloneissufficient
