Our French members often ask me how to retain French words and structures. They tell me they understand the stories but they feel they do not memorize the vocabulary.

My answer is to trust the process. Although you may feel you are not retaining the French language, your brain is incredible. When you understand the message, your brain subconsciously acquires the new words. You acquire French when you understand what you hear and what you read.

Mais car il y a toujours un mais ! But because there is always a but!

Maybe you do not trust the process yet. Maybe when you were young, you were repeatedly told that you had to learn words and verbs by heart to learn French! Maybe you think you have no memory!

All statements above are false but I have the answer: DRAW.

When you draw, you incorporate multiple ways of representing the information—visual, spatial, verbal, semantic. Drawing helps your brain to retain the new words.

Putting pencil to paper allows you to engage in an activity you can control. You decide what to draw. While focused on the creative process, you aren’t giving energy to your anxiety. You are stress free which is key to acquire a new language.

When you draw you enter a state of flow. You are in an optimal state of mental engagement and focus. You feel completely immersed in what you’re doing, to the point where you no longer notice outside distractions or troubling thoughts. This is what you want to attain when you acquire French. You want to reach the point where you no longer translate in your head. You start to think French.

Let’s draw together and acquire French the natural way. When you draw, you visualise the French words and structures. Your brain retains the French language effortlessly because you understand what you are drawing.

You don’t need to be an artist to draw words. No worries, I am not an artist. In fact, when I was at school, I dreaded the art class! But having to draw, to make learners understand French, made me realize how powerful drawing is.

Your goal is to understand my instructions to draw. Each day, you draw something new and you acquire more and more French.

I’ve been using this site for almost 2 months now and like the title says, it is by far the best resource for learning French through Comprehensible Input. Dreaming French would be an appropriate nickname because Alice’s resources really make acquiring French an absolute dream!
