Last week, Mohammad, one of our dedicated members who has been part of our community since June 2023, wrote to me. He told me he got stuck on writing in French:

I finished the Baby and Infant Stages, but I got stuck and can’t complete the Teen Stage because of the writing part.

Like many French learners, Mohammad struggles when it comes to writing in the language. It’s a common struggle, even for French people!

Writing requires you to actively produce French, rather than just comprehend it passively. This can feel daunting, especially when you’re still building your vocabulary and grammar knowledge.

Adding to the challenge, French spelling can be particularly difficult because the sounds often don’t match the spelling. There are also loads of spelling rules to remember, which can make writing feel like a constant battle, trust me I’ve been there when I was a child!

Overcome the hurdle of writing!

Here are some top tips for starting writing in French with ease:

• Start small and simple. Don’t put pressure on yourself to write long, complex sentences right away. Begin with short phrases or simple sentences about your daily life or interests.
• Use writing prompts. Having a specific topic to write about can make the process less intimidating.
  Our French program includes 31 writing sessions, each with a unique prompt. Each session comes with a video modeling the answer, a transcript, and audio. It’s ideal to incorporate writing into your French routine.
• Embrace mistakes. Making errors is a natural part of acquisition. View them as opportunities to acquire and improve, not failures.
• Read, read, read! Immersing yourself in French through reading is one of the best ways to improve your writing. When you’re reading, your brain captures and retains sentence structures, word choice and common expressions.

Remember, the key is to keep exposing yourself to French. Consistent exposure to French, first in comprehension then production, is how you make real progress.
