Coucou les French learners,
We are busy finishing and polishing the last 3 sessions of the Baby Stage online self paced course. This course is specifically designed for French beginners.
In each video, you are first introduced to a frequently used structure in French. You then watch a story which uses this high frequency structure in context. After you have watched the video, you can read the story script which includes a glossary. You can also listen to the story again told by my Dear man’s voice. There is NO need to memorize the words because you will hear them again and again in the next videos!
So far there are 28 sessions. There will be 31 sessions in total to watch, read and listen to. So it will take YOU ONE full MONTH to BUILD a STRONG French FOUNDATION.
Quelle joie ! How exciting!
Lis une BD
The number ONE condition to ACQUIRE a language is to understand what you hear and READ, that is, to receive comprehensible input.
READING helps you ABSORB the language structures and new words. When you read for PLEASURE, you don’t need to memorize the vocabulary. You acquire the new language effortlessly.
BUT how to read without effort in another language?
Les BD ( bandes dessinnées ), Comics books can be a GOOD option. They use IMAGES which help you understand the story. if you’re just starting out, they’re much less intimidating.
As comics rely on images to do a lot of the storytelling, the text gets straight to the point. If you want to start with clear dialogue presented in a linear way, comic books are great. Comics help you comprehend a situation easily AND you can see and learn about a whole different side of French culture.
Can you understand Boule et Bill ?
You get to read for pleasure. It is not a chore, it is a JOY.
TIP OF THE WEEK
ESTABLISH a pleasure reading habit in French. Read comics.
Here are my favorite ones:
- Boule et Bill relates the homely adventures of seven-year-old boy Boule and his dog Bill. Each page is a mini story with a fun ending. I have to say Les aventures de Marie et Médor are largely inspired by Boule et Bill which I loved reading when I was young.
- Lucky Luke takes place in the American Old West of the United States. It stars the titular Lucky Luke, a gunslinger known as l’homme qui tire plus vite que son ombre, the “man who shoots faster than his shadow”, and his smart horse Jolly Jumper. It is really funny too!
- Largo Winch is a more serious series. A young and handsome orphan, is propelled to the head of a business empire, Group W, after his adoptive father Nerio is murdered.
And of course, Les Schtroumpfs !
QUOI DE NEUF ?
I am back with A NEW FREE VIDEO in the Culture francophone : Qui est ? series about Hergé, the famous Belgian cartoonist who created The Adventures of Tintin. In fact, most BD come from Belgium!
Thomas, my 12 years old son continues to share fun and interesting facts about wild animals. These are short texts you can read and listen to when you join the amazing French learners community. There is new one about le boa émeraude and another one about le perroquet, the parrot. These are perfect when you are at an upper beginner level and you want to enrich your vocabulary.
Pygmalion is a Greek myth easy understand when you are at the Baby Stage.
REVIEW OF THE WEEK
Guy who joined us says: ” I have thoroughly enjoyed all of “Les points culture” of Marie et Médor à Paris.
I wish I have knew all these before I have visited Paris, but I will sure remember it if I will visit again, which I guess that I will.
This has added so much flavor and discussed many of the things that have brought me to want to know French. Thank you so much.”
Happy French acquisition!
P.S. Got friends, family, colleagues or clients who want to become fluent in French? Share this with them, they’ll thank you for it 🙂
