Julie commented about our online sessions:
Although not everything has to be funny (and I enjoy the non-humorous portions very much), the humor in the classes is so relaxing.
This comment made me think about how humor is indeed a powerful tool when you are acquiring French (or any other languages). Humor helps to lower the affective filter.
What is the affective filter?
The affective filter refers to the emotional and psychological factors that can either facilitate or hinder the process of acquiring a new language.
When the affective filter is low, you are more relaxed, open to new experiences, and receptive to language input.
Conversely, when the affective filter is high due to factors like anxiety, stress, or self-consciousness, it can impede language acquisition by blocking the processing and retention of new information.
In essence, a low affective filter creates a more conducive environment for language acquisition, while a high affective filter can act as a barrier.

How does humor supercharges your French journey?
Humor reduces anxiety. It creates a relaxed and positive atmosphere, reducing the anxiety and self-consciousness that you may feel when using a new language. When you feel at ease, you are more willing to make mistakes and engage in meaningful communication.
Are you a risk-taker? Humor will encourage you to take risks for sure! In a humor-filled environment, you are more likely to take linguistic risks, try out new expressions, and experiment with the language without fear of judgment. This helps you become more confident and fluent in your communication.
Humor also improves memory. Humorous situations or content often involve wordplay, puns, or memorable phrases. Such linguistic playfulness help you remember vocabulary and language structures more easily.
Watch, read and listen (for free!) to this humorous story about Marie and her dog, Médor. They go out to a restaurant and Marie wants to have access to Wifi.
Humor cultivates connection. In a language session, it creates a sense of camaraderie and connection among learners and with native speakers too. Sharing jokes or understanding cultural humor fosters a deeper understanding of the language and its nuances, enhancing overall communication skills.
This leads to motivation. Humor increases motivation. Humorous content, such as funny videos, jokes, or playful language activities, make language acquisition enjoyable and entertaining. When you have fun with the language, you become more motivated to continue acquiring it.
That is why incorporating humor into your French journey creates a positive and supportive language environment. It helps you feel more comfortable, open to new language, and ready to embrace the challenges of language acquisition. #enjoytheride

Before, I was always asking myself what is the meaning of this and that word etc.. But now, I seemed to be able to guess so many words in your story. You are good story teller and artist. Your gesture and facial expressions helped too. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
