Coucou les French learners,
Have you ever felt frustrated by language levels that don’t quite capture your progress?
You’re not alone.
Traditional language levels, like A1 to C2, are widely used but often fall short in describing the nuanced journey of language acquisition.
These levels refer to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which categorizes language proficiency from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery).
The problem is they focus heavily on measurable skills and test results, potentially overlooking the natural, intuitive aspects of language development.
While these levels are widely recognized, I prefer not to focus on them
because they emphasize learning rather than acquisition.
Language learning typically involves conscious study of grammar rules and vocabulary.
Whereas language acquisition is a natural process that mimics how we acquire our native language. In acquisition, comprehension comes first, followed by output, writing and speaking.
This aligns closely with how our brains naturally process and internalize language.
Stages of Language Development: A New Framework
Instead of rigid levels, consider your French journey as a series of developmental stages, much like human growth.
Instead of traditional levels, I prefer to think of language development in terms of life stages:
Baby and Infant for beginners. You want to focus on comprehension (not speaking!).
Teen for intermediate learners. You start to communicate in everyday situations, but you are still developing.
Adult and Senior for advanced learners. You can express yourself freely and you have deep cultural understanding.
Why Stages Work Better
This approach aligns closely with how we naturally acquire language. It emphasizes progress as a continuous journey rather than a series of hurdles to overcome.
Stages allow for a more holistic view of your abilities, acknowledging that you might be at different stages in different aspects of the language (listening, speaking, reading, writing).
This framework better reflects the natural progression
of French acquisition and helps you visualize your journey intuitively.
Embrace Your Current Stage
Understanding your current stage help you set appropriate goals and choose the approach that suit your developmental needs.
We’ve designed our French program around these natural language stages.
Whether you’re a “French baby” just starting out, or a “French teen” ready to dive into more complex material, we have a stage that’s right for you.

This week, Danyle shared on Trustpilot:
I am very happy to have found the AliceAyel website. I spent almost a year listening and reading through the stories on her site, starting at the Infant stage and working my way slowly through the Adult stage. My comprehension in reading and listening shot up and I recently signed up for her strong beginner’s bookclub. This, in turn, led me to her Private Coaching and now Alice is helping me on my journey to learn French speaking with confidence even when I make mistakes.
There is also a large community of french learner’s on her website which translates to lifelong learning of the French language.
Merci Alice!
